Une télé-réalité dans le monde du vin ! / Reality TV in the wine world !

A reality-show about the wine world, no it is not happening in France ( because of the Evin law...) but in the USA.
I already hear you asking: "A reality show about wine ? But what are the people doing ?"
People are simply making ... wine !!
Actually it is more or less simple, 12 candidates will participate in all the steps in winemaking; starting in the vines by harvesting the grapes, going through the reception of the grapes at the cellar and the winemaking process to finally get to an end product: bottled wine.

Behind the base work of a winemaker there is also the whole wine world that comes naturally; the candicates discover the business part: they will have to be inspired to sell wine. They will also learn how to talk about wine: explain what is wine and discover the art of wine tasting.

Season 1 already broadcast on PBS, shooting of season 2 is done. Season one took place in California ( Paso Robles ), the season 2 as the particularity of being partly shot in our beautiful Rhone Valley.

Being a winemaker I can only be happy to see people discovering the wine world this way, but it could be better: indeed in France advertising about wine on TV is totally forbidden ( 2 projects of wine channels aborted because of that ). Too little consumers really know wine in France, this kind of show would bring them a new vision and lots of information about our passion and products.
In a perfect world we would be part of other shows like "Top Chef". Lets dream today of having a show like "Top Winemaker" in the next years !!

Cap vers l'Afrique du Sud ! 1ère partie / Heading toward South Africa ! Part 1

You all know that the Chateau Saint Nabor is constantly looking for new markets. December 2010 was the month of South Africa; during a business trip I discovered this country of a thousand faces. Here is my story !

Navire Hollandais arrivant au Cap / Dutch vessel in the Cape Bay

Un peu d'histoire / A bit of History

South Africa as we know it today gets its origins back in 1652, the first europeans established in the Cape were part of the Dutch East India Company. The original idea was to create a re-supply point commanded by the Dutch Jan van Riebeeck; with time it began a full-fledged colony and many europeans moved to the Cape.

With the years this colony became a country by itself. In a short time a lot of wars happened, British against Boers (Farmers from dutch origins), Boers against Zulus and British against Zulus.
During this time the Dutch government gave away the place to the British government, making South Africa part of the British Empire. Several Boers republics were created and officially recognized by Great Britain. This didn't stop the desire of domination, and after several battles which killed a lot of people Great Britain officially annexed the whole South Africa.
In 1910 the dominion of the Union of South Africa is created. It is only in 1652 that a referendum ( or ballot question ) approves the abolition of Monarchy and that the Republic of South Africa, as we know it today, is created.

A very important period for South Africa was Apartheid (Afrikaans word meaning separateness), a politic of "separate development" based on racial and ethnic selection started in 1948. Considering the international pressure with several boycotts but also the evolution of the people in the country itself, this concept was abolished on June 30 1991. The old politic prisoner and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela became the first black and democratic president of South Africa in 1994. Its unique mandate was marked by the success of its politic of reconciliation between white and black South Africans, named "Rainbow Nation" by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Today, besides few persistant problems, South Africa can be called a multiracial and fully democratic country, where peace between people is always there.

The wine route on a provencal crib !

Every year in the hamlet of Saint Gely a whole village is being created. This village has something special, it fits into Jean-Marc's attic !

Working as an electrician, his passion is something totally different. With more than 400 characters and 250 animals, Jean Marc creates every year a whole provencial village with manger figurines.

No one is left out, on the town square around the fountain we find the small market with the fruit and vegetable merchant, the butcher, the cheese merchant, etc... Just next to them we see the mayor at the entrance of the city hall; located between the school where it is break time and the restaurant where you find the players of "belote" (card game). Obviously we can see a petanque game, let's be careful to not disturb them, a player is ready to throw his ball !

Further up on the hill we see the olive trees, by the way it is harvest time !
Just under, next to the mill we recognize Alphonse Daudet, Frederic Mistral and Marcel Pagnol, famous provencal writers. Not far from there, we have a shepherd with his goat, it's Mister Seguin !

We go a few kilometers south, we arrive at the Camargue. The "Manadiers" are moving the bulls, just next to them some gypsies settled a camp with their caravan and prepared a camp fire.

We come back north and find some hunters currently hunting wild boars; the mushrooms and truffles harvesters better be careful !

On the way back we are on the Côtes du Rhône wine route, we won't hesitate to stop at the Chateau Saint Nabor tasting room and taste the latest wine release !

There are so many that I can't name them all but I will finish with the ones that make it all possible: the nativity crib ! Established in an old stable.

La crèche restera visible jusqu'a la fin Janvier.
The crib will be visible until the end of January

A bit of advertising can not hurt !

Last November I got a phone call from a journalist of the magazine "La Vigne" (french professionnal magazine). While writing an article about winemaker blogs she found Chateau Saint Nabor's Blog interesting and wanted to ask me a few questions !

Why Not ! Some advertising can't hurt; and someone telling you that your blog is interesiting is always good to hear !

It has been one year since this blog exists, the anniversary date is a kind of self-analysis of what has been done and what is left to do.
Each article is well-thought-through, being educational without bombarding you with too many technical terms; telling about the estate's life without repeating myself too much and using just a touch a humor; all of those aspects are part of the writing.

Without a doubt winter is here !

Since a few weeks already we are experiencing some cold temperature, below 0 Celcius ( 32° F). You would say it's the season, but we also got a few snowflakes; it shows that the temperature is below normal.

Le vignoble un matin à -5°C / Vineyard the morning with 23°F

Work in the cellar continues, the wines are being filtered; all along the tasting we can see that 2010 vintage will be high quality. White and Rosé wines are already filtered and resting untill next year.

Most of the work is now in the vineyards, pruning season has started. First a pre-pruning is done by machine which will make the pruning by hand easier.
Pruning consists of removing the shoots of the year and keep only a few buds which will give the shoots of next year. Next crop is already being prepared now. Pruning season will go untill March.

If you haven't had the opportunity to participate at our open doors weekend for the Primeur, the tasting room stays open everyday.
